So, Karli, What Do You Do?
Hi, my name is Karli Sherman, and I’m a Speaker and Leadership Coach!
Without fail, when someone asks me what I do for a living, I get the same response. It sounds something like this…
“So you’re a speaker, leadership coach, and executive coach … what’s the difference between those things? What do you speak or coach about?”
This is a very reasonable question because there are different kinds of speakers and coaches.
All of these are valid and important...just different!
So what does Karli do?
I do professional development training.
I deliver training on a variety of topics all related to helping professionals level up as leaders/employees/managers/volunteers/family members/citizens.
I deliver training on topics including (but not limited to):
Conflict management
Courageous leadership
Public speaking skills
Networking
Teambuilding
and Personality Typologies
How does Karli teach professional development?
I deliver that training in a variety of ways.
For me, the terms I list in my job title mainly refer to the difference in how I deliver my professional development lessons based on the number of people.
Individual and small group = coaching sessions (re: executive coaching)
Medium-sized groups = workshops (re: leadership coaching)
Large groups = keynote presentation (re: speaker)
My subject matter and learning objectives don’t drastically change.
The way I deliver that subject matter and the process for achieving the learning objectives is what changes.
Other words I use to describe what I do are educator and consultant.
Both are very accurate job titles, but I use them less because of social and professional connotations. “Educator” is more commonly associated with “teacher” and “consultant” is often associated with “business consultant” which is what a business coach does.
And I’m not a school teacher.
I’m not a business coach.
I’m not a life coach.
And I’m not a motivational speaker.
Those are all tangentially related to what I do, they are like cousins to my field of professional development. But they are distinct.
And not what I specialize in.
Who does Karli speak to?
I work with companies, campuses, nonprofits, and individuals to enhance team communication and professional skills, and create better human connections.
I also specialize in women’s groups and collegiate groups!
I have worked with:
Office staffs
Corporate executive teams
Non-profit boards
Civic leadership groups
Volunteer organizations
Fraternities and sororities
Professional associations
College student organizations
Executive boards
Colleges and universities
National/regional conferences
I have coached:
C-suite executives
Directors of nonprofits
Presidents of leadership organizations
Local and state pageant queens
Leaders transitioning into new roles
Families and couples deepening their relationships
What else does Karli do?
I also do things that are not listed in my umbrella job title like pageant coaching, emceeing, and officiating weddings!
These all directly employ a lot of the same skills and expertise I use in the facilitation of my workshops. But because of their specificity in scope, I choose not to include those in my main job title.
That would be like someone saying they are a “parade organizer, a concert producer, and a wedding planner” instead of saying “event manager.”
It’s just easier to go with the umbrella title rather than name too many specifics, right?
